Author Neal Stephenson has started a "crowdfunding" project to bring real sword fighting to video games. He's already about 1/5th to his goal, with most of a month left. It's not every day that someone'll give you a sword for funding his start-up.
Time for people to try making "realistic" games again? It doesn't work because the whole reason to play video games is to get away from reality. Any "realistic" sword fighting game would, by definition, have to be be less exciting than competitive fencing, as well as being either more difficult to control or having all the interesting options stripped away by the user interface.
But hey, maybe someone on the project will come to their senses, realize that fun is better than realism, and come up with something that surprises everyone. That's how Tribes, Civilization, and Sim City got started, after all.
