Me, I'd hit the little monster with something heavy. Ellen's dealt with awful cats for most of fifteen years, and she doesn't quite know what to make of it. It'd be NICE to think the other cat was trying to stop the madness. Me, I'm thinking he was just trying to steer it all onto something more valuable.
The cat probably stepped on a shard of broken glass, and got it jammed in its paw. Dogs that suffer a sudden unexpected wound tend to instinctively lick and/or bite at the area that's hurting them, but cats more often go into berzerk attack mode on the largest living thing they see (in this case, the babysitter).
