What happens when you let a bunch of foodies do a blind taste test to compare Wal Mart produce to that of a more prominent "organic" grocery chain? The results surprised them likely as much as they'll surprise you. We finally got a modern Super Center installed near us, and it's definitely a lot nicer than the ones I remember in Arkansas. It's even more welcome to hear they've figured out how to make "buy local, buy sustainable" actually profitable. Will it stop the far-left end of the peanut gallery from twirling in their towers every time they see a yellow smiley? Doubtful. "If both are against you, bang on the table," that sort of thing.
I don't care. I still won't shop there. Anyone who attempts to force their moral agenda upon me doesn't get my business if I can help it.
Stopped carrying Maxim because it was teh pr0n. Only carry the radio-friendly versions of CDs. This may have changed, but that they'd do it is enough for me to stop shopping there.
Now - for the fun contradiction. I fully support their right to do this, however.
Posted by: Ron ap Rhys on February 17, 2010 08:14 AMThe hilarious thing about the left side of the spectrum is that they simply can't wrap their minds around the concept of "I'll badmouth and boycott them, but I refuse to send stormtroopers in to destroy them." Either you're absolutely in favor of something or absolutely against it, with no middle ground possible.
Then they project their own lack of discernment, and especially their own closed-mindedness, onto anyone who disagrees with them...
Posted by: Tatterdemalian on February 17, 2010 09:15 AMI'm not sure I'm following you. There's a full spectrum of feelings towards any particular thing. I think that WalMart actually does quite a bit of good in terms of overall supply chain management, reduction of costs to the end consumers, and encouraging competition. However, I very much dislike their morality. That's why I boycott them - however I don't want to legislate that they can't sell what they want nor do I want them be closed. I want them to force Target and other stores to keep their prices down so everything costs me less.
With that in mind, I'm just confused as to where you're coming from.
Posted by: Ron ap Rhys on February 17, 2010 02:41 PMOh, just speaking from my own personal experience. Every liberal ex-friend I have thinks that if you don't favor some sort of "green police" with the power to put people in jail if they fall behind in chasing the latest enviro-fad, you're a planet-raping fascist.
It's one of the reasons I take pride in being labeled a "neocon," despite the fact that I favor sensible environmental management myself.
Posted by: Tatterdemalian on February 17, 2010 10:11 PMAhh - that clears it up. I've run into those types myself. I think I bother the hell out of them because I love the outdoors, actually plant things to make the environment better, favor renewable energy, yet drive an SUV (Xterras f-ing ROCK!) and go off-roading.
