What? Doesn't everyone want to stick a naked infant in a net and hang it out the window? Just because they make a nifty picture does not mean they make life easier.
The Germans (who, after all, over-engineer everything) had a curved-barrel apparatus for the MP44 assault rifle (and the 98k standard bolt-action rifle) during WWII, twelve years before the army photo here (cool pic of the M3 grease-gun tho').
It actually worked well in combat, shooting around corners.
