Remember those scientists who were working on a way to get algae to poop fuel? They seem to be progressing nicely. 100k gallons of fuel in a year is quite a lot of gas, but it's less than a drop of what the whole country uses in a day. Still, ya gotta start somewhere, and this also seems to demonstrate the technique is not just a whole lotta hype.
Lost near the bottom of the article - every gallon of ethanol produced also produces a gallon of freshwater. Think about the impact for folks in Cali. Instead of pumping all the water out of the southwest, they could install factories like this on their coasts. Freshwater adds to the supply, ethanol is created and sold. Honestly, this is a great idea if it works out and is cost-effective.
Maybe I'll do some digging to see if vehicles powered by ethanol are useful or not.
