When College Kids Attack
Want to see what happens when nerdy types with too much time, talent, and their parent's cash get out of hand? Take a look. I've never understood why many men (and a few women) seem to think it's funny to make other people's lives annoying just for the sake of it. Life is just too damned difficult as it is to have some incompetent boob making it worse just for the fun of it. I guess I'm just too much of a wimp to "get it."
I'd say it's similar to apical dominance for the young. They feel a need to make their mark so they're noticed by everyone else (instinctually and evolutionarily, this leads to better chances to mate). Additionally, I'd say there's a fair smattering of individuals that have horribly boring (or just horrible) lives and this is their way to have fun. Since they can't dominate or be known in any other way (either due to physical size, lack of personal confidence, skill, etc), this is their way of satisfying that urge.
But dammit, that's funny. Time Magazine got h4x0r3d.

Of course, there are reasons the hordes of Anonymous are unemployed, just like there were reasons the factory workers got laid off, and it's more often the fault of laziness and sociopathy among the disgruntled than it is greed and opression of "The Man."
