Go for the discussion of kids and cons, stay for the pictures of goofy fen. Especially the guy in the Wonder Woman suit.
We haven't gone to a convention in years. Mid-Atlantic fandom is just too cliquish for me, and while Ellen enjoyed the people watching just about everything else left her cold. That said, if Olivia wanted to go to a con, I certainly wouldn't stop her.
I went to PhilCon in 1997. The first Con of any kind I had attended since going to a Dr. Who convention in Nashville in 1985. PhilCon was on a much larger scale, of course.
The thing that sticks with me most about it is that, looking around, I was far-and-away the coolest person there. Which is very disturbing when you consider just how big a geek I am! And this from just looking around in the sales area! I didn't attend any panel discussions or anything like that.
I haven't returned.
Posted by: Mark on January 23, 2009 10:57 AMIt'd be worth going for the people watching, but since I don't really do any gaming anymore, nor am I even close to current on my anime, it'd end up being nothing more than people watching.
Well, and me blowing money on stuff I'll end up never using.
Though getting Amber dressed like Sailor Moon has possibilities...

Posted by: Kelly on January 23, 2009 12:50 PMI think 97 was our last con as well. Philcon is, I think, the very oldest con in the country, VERY literary and (by reputation) even more cliquish.
I'd forgotten about the "I am the coolest person in this room!!!" angle. If you've never felt normal in your life, but wash regularly and dress in street clothes then there WILL be people at a con who will make you feel like the popular football hero in high school. It's the strangest thing.
The middle-america cons I went to before I moved out here were much more fun for me. They weren't as specialized, and even the big ones strove to have something for everyone. There was a lot more music, too.
One of these days we'll almost certainly go back to Balticon, because Ellen and I both *loved* the art room and we fully intend to spend Olivia's inheritance on various original pieces of artwork.
Posted by: scott on January 23, 2009 01:01 PMAmber as Sailor Moon, huh? Hmmmmmmmmm.
I think about you two every time I see the Arby's "roleplay" commercial.
"Me likey" indeed! :-D
