Reason # 431 on the Why I Don't Like Seafood list: giant parasites:
A man who contends he got a 9-foot tapeworm after eating undercooked fish is suing a Chicago restaurant.
The article isn't clear on the time line, and makes it sound like it all happened very quickly. If so, well, 9 foot tapeworms don't get that big overnight. I think. How the heck should I know?
I went a-looking for tapeworm growth rates and was disappointed. I don't remember them growing all that fast.
though, oddly enough, I did find out that there is a fairly common fish-tapeworm out there. Some folks show that up to 80% of different populations in Finland are infected with this. Guessing it's not that big of a deal.
Fun fact - there was a 100' tapeworm removed from a whale carcass. Article is found via Wiki and is in Time magazine.
