Burger in a Vat

Making the rounds: P.E.T.A. has announced $1 million prize for the first company to create "in vitro" meat. According to the article, this was a hard-fought idea within the organization itself. Considering the loopy politics too often associated with PETA, I'm not surprised.

Something tells me there's a man with a pitch fork and a tail wearing a parka and an extremely annoyed expression knocking on the office door of PETA headquarters.

PETA is an interesting study in how a basically benign organization interested in animal welfare--kind of like the ASPCA and the RSPCA--can get co-opted by a subgroup of whackos within their own ranks, and more or less overnight remade into their kind of organization...with all the loopy and occasional unintentionally humorous results that implies.

And while said whackos patted themselves on the back for a 'job well done', without realizing it, they destroyed their own credibility--their "street cred"--in the process.
