Dune Redux

It would appear Hollywood's taking another crack at bringing Dune to the big screen. I quite liked the Sci-Fi channel's miniseries version, and strongly believe the only way you can do such a sprawling novel justice is in a multi-part treatment. Of course, Peter Jackson showed with LOTR that it's possible, but the rarity of his success proves it to be the exception, not the rule.

Anyway, best of luck to them and here's to hoping it doesn't suck!

Like the movie versions 1 and 1a, and of course the miniseries, taught us: the only way to do Dune properly is to do it multiple-hours long. There is just too much stuff to make into even a 3-hour movie and make it cogent and understandable to folks who have never, ever read the books.

No one is that good a screenplay-adapter to make that happen!

Dune? Today? Never happen; there's be a shitstorm once everyone figures out that the Fremen are actually Arabs.

The Fremen are different enough from modern-day Arabs (taking personal responsibility for their actions vs. always blaming the outsiders / Jews, making do with limited resources vs. preferring to extract survival necessities from others by theft or by force, respect for women vs. beating them senseless for make-believe crimes) that nobody could tell unless Frank Herbert himself screamed it in their faces, and then they'd just say, "It's sad when a writer falls for his own fantasies."
