Instapundit linked up this colorful recollection of what it was like to fly the SR-71. When you're talking about what is still the world's fastest jet, it's hard not to stray into superlatives.
The Air Force never got over the fact that the CIA got a Mach 3 plane but the USAF never did.
Read up on the history of the end of the SR-71. McNamara ordering all the tooling destroyed so that no more could be built. The USAF directly disobeying an act of Congress to keep it from flying again. It's shocking the degree to which the Air Force can be bastards when someone threatens their status as The Best God Damned Pilots On This Earth.
