While I definitely enjoy air travel for its own sake, trying to optimize the whole thing so as to maximize airmiles seems a little extreme to me. Maybe when I was single, it would've held more appeal?
Well, they explain it in the article. The idea is that your business travel puts you just barely below the requirement to get the "super ultra" Frequent-Flier class (which comes with automatic free upgrades and stuff like that.) So you take a few useless trips just to push yourself over that edge. (I actually heard about this a while ago; it's not a new concept.)
