**ducks thrown object and runs away--terribly fast**
Posted by: Mark on May 2, 2007 04:11 PMMark - I think you're dead on. A puppy is as devoted to you as it gets. A cat, OTOH, is plotting your demise even as you feed it.
From experience, the cat gazing into your eyes is getting ready to puke on you. Or claw your face. Or rape another cat, using you as the launch point...
Posted by: ronaprhys on May 2, 2007 04:39 PMCats are good at looking like they love you. They also make pleasant noises when content.
I wouldn't say they're plotting your demise, any more than I'd say they love their owners. I really don't think their brains are able to plot more than their next potential source of food, location to eliminate waste, defensible sleeping den, or (for the unneutered) reproductive opportunity.
But I'll be damned if they aren't cute when they're doing these things.
I think it was Terry Pratchett who said something like, "cats place anything they see in one of four categories: things you eat, things you run from, things you have sex with, and rocks." By this definition, we are most likely entertaining rocks.
