In all honesty, I don't know the story behind this one. It was just a neat plane with cool lighting.
It's a Lockheed Vega, their first really successful aircraft design.
The wing joint was structurally sound, but passengers were so concerned about its appearance that Lockheed considered adding a nonfunctional strut between the wing and the body to make it look stronger...
