The below-linked article about an MoD official got me to thinking about the only "big" UFO event I can personally remember, so I went and did a little research on the Rendlesham Forest Incident. I seem to remember the Today show ran the audio tape mentioned in the article, but thought it was much earlier than 1984. No matter, it would seem the event has been pretty thoroughly explained as weird weather combining with a lighthouse to scare the beezejus out of some American servicemen.
FWIW, my personal experience does have an incident I can't explain (and I've got a decent amount of experience with aircraft, mind you). It was a very clear Ohio night and I had taken Pongo out to walk him. As I was standing there waiting on him to conduct his "transaction", I was looking up at the skies and saw some small lights moving up in the sky. Since jets and the like fascinate me, I watched them - even though they were far enough up I couldn't see anything but the white point of light.
After a few minutes, one of the lights that was going across the sky did a 90 degree turn - not a curve, a 90 degree turn - without any loss of forward momentum, nor was any lateral momentum carried on. Planes don't do that. Not at that apparent speed.
I, for one, welcome our new inertia-abandoning overlords.
