So what does it mean when you see sneakers hanging from powerlines? It would seem nobody knows for sure. I first noticed this sort of thing five, maybe six years ago near our old apartment. I've seen them elsewhere now, I figured because of some copycat instinct.
Me, I'm impressed people can toss them up there without some sort of handle or clamp. Then again, I have trouble walking and chewing gum at the same time, so I guess you'd say I'm easily impressed by this sort of thing.
I don't know about the sneakers, but when I was in the Army, it was customary when you ETS'ed (ETS=Estimated Time of Seperation, i.e. the end of your enlistment, or as we called it, Echo Tango See-Ya!) to paint a pair of your combat boots silver or dayglow something (so they could not be used by someone else, ergo retired like yourself), and throw them up over the power lines....signifying that the Army could kiss your lower hull, cause you weren't coming back. Ever.
Seems like there were always base regulations against it, but that never stopped it from happening.
