This creature was attacking Ajax today. We came home from work and this bug was on my floor jumping on top of Ajax in attempts to decapitate him and eat him up! This is the second BIG mantis I have had in my garden this year. Or yet, it could be the very same one!
Poor Ajax. It does look scary and big upclose. I wouldn't want this creature on my back either.
Posted by: Mom on October 19, 2005 06:02 AMsaw one of these things on Random Nature Channel. It attacked some monkey and knocked the monkey off the branch. Even as I read that, it sounds wrong, but that's what happened.
To be fair, it was a smaller monkey, but still. Insects should not be attacking mammals and kicking ass. This ain't some episode of the Godzira movies.
Posted by: ronaprhys on October 19, 2005 09:03 AMSee if your complex has a contract for pest control. If not ask them what to do. If this is the second one of these critters you have found there may be in infestation. Could be harmful to Olivia as well as the rest of your critters.
Posted by: Pat on October 19, 2005 10:28 AMOr wait for winter to hit - these are outside critters, not inside ones. They'll die very quickly once their food source dries up. Plus, they're good for the overall environment since they kill pests. Kinda like spiders (which I believe should be dealt with by pointing the shotgun in their general direction and cutting loose) - as much as I hate them, I'm actually setting them loose outside (because Amber wants them to be set free).
Posted by: ronaprhys on October 19, 2005 11:56 AMthey are not harmful ,but beneficial to gardens. They just have bad attitudes :)

Posted by: ellen on October 19, 2005 12:33 PMlol... mantids are awesome, dunno why you people are all so afraid of them.
Posted by: Mettler on November 26, 2007 10:21 PMBecause they fly, and claw, and bite. I hate bug bites more than animal bites, because bug saliva tends to contain all sorts of nasty chemicals that wreak havoc on my flesh, and the puncture wounds they make ensure that all the crap they inject into my skin stays there until half my arm is a festering mess.
Posted by: Tatterdemalian on November 26, 2007 10:50 PMMantids don't bite people. The equivalent would be if you went out and bit a live buffalo.
Also, it wasn't attempting to decapitate Ajax and _eat_ him; it was a female, and it was horny, and mantid sex starts out with ripping the male's head off.
Posted by: DensityDuck on November 28, 2007 02:22 AMI've bitten a live buffalo. In all fairness, though, he started the fight. (Finished it too.)
