From various sources: Boy, the press sure does think mighty highly of Humvee armor. Note caption on the lower-left side:
The Armor Tempered steel, 3/8-inch thick, is capable of withstanding 155mm Howitzer rounds.
For those of you who don't spend your free time memorizing the various statistics of military gear (I have a life! I do! It just involves learning about cool things that blow stuff up. It is so a life! THhhppt!!!), the caption claims that, with this armor, a Humvee can withstand a hit from one of these. Most buildings can't stand up to a 155.
Yep - I can certainly see .325" thick armor stopping a 6.10" diameter shell. Makes perfect sense.
By the way, is today "rant at the press day"? Just asking as it's always a fun thing to do and it seems to follow the gist of posts so far...

Posted by: scott on April 26, 2005 02:09 PMI'm pretty sure my chuppathingy can handle a 155mm round.
Posted by: Brass on April 26, 2005 05:42 PMWell, at least they aren't *inviting* terrorists to launch attacks at our troops, for a change.
Besides, the armor plates might actually withstand a Howitzer shell... they would be violently propelled a hundred yards to the side, and everything attached to them or even near them (including everyone in the vehicle) ripped to shreds, but they would withstand it. Kind of like Daffy Duck's disintegration-proof vest.
An M1 can't withstand a direct hit from a 155MM Howitzer because of the fact that howitzers aren't a direct fire weapon (For the most part) and the round would land on top of the Hummer or the M1. I'm preatty sure the troops don't so totally have thier heads up thier ass's that they wouldn't notice a 155 if it were used in direct fire.
What he probably ment to say was that the armor would deflect shrapnel from a 155 hitting close to it.
