At first I thought this article on why women seem to be such bad map readers was a joke. I mean, come on, the lead scientist's name is "Jung"? But then I read this (emphasis added):
Research has also found that in childhood, girls' vocabulary develops more quickly and that in later life women can speak 20,000 to 25,000 words a day compared to a man's 7000 to 10,000.
Judging by how much (and how fast) my wife talks on the phone, this may be an underestimate.
Rob Becker, in his show 'Defending the Caveman' was a very humourous bit about men running out of words. to paraphrase, "At the end of the day when a man is just sitting and watching TV and you want to talk and all he does is grunt, don't be mad, he's just out of words!"
Posted by: Mike Jacobs on January 24, 2005 08:52 AMWhat's interesting is that the dean, or some other muckety-muck, of Harvard talked about this to some extent, using it as a potential explanation as to why we don't see as many women in top science roles. Poor bastard is being crucified and has had to spend most of his time apologizing. On top of that, I think they're revisiting the hiring standards there as well.
And here is some potential evidence as to why. Mind you, I'm not being sexist here, just pointing to a problem with today's society: That science that contradicts a particular groups cherished viewpoint must be squelched.
