Pitbulls

I have met a few mean pits in my history of veterinary medicine. Those were always the ones that had human 'companions' that worried over a $9.95 rabies vaccine vs. the huge gash on the side of the dog's head and that it was malnurished ( "I gots me a thourougbred."- no dumbass, you have a dog, not a horse. Let's get educated first, pets next) Thats when we would report them. One specific time one of us walked out to the parking lot and saw 5 other dogs shoved into the back of a pick up truck with invalid tags.

MOST to ALL of the pits I have met are sweethearts. My very first encounter was with a 6 week old Pitbull named Lucy from The Washington Animal Rescue League where I worked in the late 90's. This pit came to us with 2 broken femurs (in the center of the bone, not on the ends). This puppy went through 2 surguries and never once showed a mean streak. EVER. She was with us for 6 months before we finally adopted her out to a family with children. From what I know, all is well with her.

This video has some devestating photos. You have been warned.

The Pitbull Problem.

ellen, the meanest dog I ever encountered, bar none, was a laborador retriever.

Second most constant scary attack was a jack russel terrier.

Pits (and Rotties) are, however, easier to "turn" and more dangerous to life and limb when they are turned.

Thanks for the link.

I have owned several dogs of many breeds over the years, including labs, cocker spaniels rottwiellers, springer spaniels, german shephards and the mixed mutts. I always feared pits because of what I had heard from media and friends. Over the last couple of years I have noticed that pits are being used for many things i.e. police dogs and movies. Well, a year and a half ago I was introduced to a pit and fell in love with this being. He is loving to EVERYONE especially children. After my last cocker past away I vowed to never have a dog again because the pain of loosing is so hard when you loose your friend. My brother and sister-in-law(owner of the pit I fell in love with) gave me one of his offspring( a beautiful brindle stafforshire pit). I have never been this close to an animal in my life. I am deeply upset that people do not want to give them a chance. My pets have always been treated as part of the family not an animal. Yet, my lab, cocker, springer, shepard and mutts had all bitten at least once. One even attacked a child( or tried, I was there and did not allow it to happen) none-the-less attacked. The rott nor the pitt have ever bitten anyone and this pit(Tera) is the best thing that ever happened to me. I have never had anything so loyal, loving and understanding. She plays gently, cuddles, and is very well mannered. Because of my early life beliefs on pits and the reality check that I have recieved; I am writing a 10 page report on "The Furocious Pitbull". This site has been a wonderful enlightenment to the fact that people are the problem not the dog. I will be using your site as a reference and hoping to change other peoples ideas and myths about the most wonderful breed I have come to know. We now have 2 pits and have many friends who now own them. They are not stupid people and also would not give up their best friends. Thanks for sharing your site and for the tears I shed watching your video.

i have a pitbull, and she is no harm to anyone, so if you guys wanna ban them, ban them in YOUR own home, not around the world, because what about the pitbulls that never hurt anyone, and they are going to be banned for just being alive. it's all a load of b/s.

I also have a pitbull. I could not have made a better decision then to bring home my american pitbull terrier. People love to stereotype these type of dogs simply because of a very few number of incidednts involving this type of bull. I would just like to say that - just like humans, pitbulls can be both extremely vicous, but on the other side of the spectrum - extremely loving, gentle and protective - IT ALL DEPENDS ON THEIR OWNERS AND THE DOGS' UPBRINGING.......Its as simple as that!!!!!!!!!!

No breed of dog is born mean. The problem lies in educating the public. As long as people are unable to see beyond themselves and their wants (needs are a seperate and valid thing), there will always be this kind of problem. The ignorant and self-centered see animals as objects to be ignored, abused, and manipulated as the whim strikes them, not as thinking, feeling, sensitive creatures with the same basic rights as ourselves. How completely arrogant to assume our human status negates our responsibility to be compassionate to "lesser" creatures. Not suprisingly, we treat many of our so-called "lesser" human brethren in the same callous manner. Complete indifference to their plight can be an equal crime to overt cruelty. If only there were a way to change the hearts and minds of these people not only would the pitbull issues be solved, but probably most other social ills too. How do you legislate compassion and courtesy? This is a symptom of a much larger problem which is, I fear, unsolvable. Hard to give a s--t about your fellow man, much less your dog (or cat) when you're pretty sure no one else, including your government, gives a s--t about you. Poverty, lack of education, lack of opportunities, overcrowding and irresponsible parenting have taken over with frightening speed. Can't afford a movie? That's okay, we'll just take the kids to a dog fight. We're raising a nation of sociopaths. Oops, really went into a rant on this one. Perhaps a little percussive social maintenance is in order for these jerks (a swift kick upside the head)? Alas, more permanent solutions are illegal and smack of George Orwell (or Hitler). Gee, I'm starting to sound a liitle sociopathic myself. Oh well, at least I know it.

I haven't ever had a pitbull, so I'm not perfectly sure about how the dogs are, but I almost do agree that pitbulls are brought up a certain way. My dad says that the dogs are born with an instinct to kill and turn on humans, and those pitbull owners out there are "duh" going to say he's wrong, but just because your pitbull hasn't attacked anyone, and you people say that your love for pitbulls will never change, what if it hasn't happened yet. I'm not trying to scare you, but it could happen, to ANYONE. I'm on both sides, because I really don't know. What I want is to know that pitbulls are brought up by different people, so...I'm not sure. I DO love dogs, and I'm totally a dog person, but I'm not sure.

Pitbulls are aggressive animals. They are strong animals, and if they are brought up by the wrong people, they may end up hurting and killing people. But, if they end up in the right hands, they can grow up to be sweet dogs, just like any other dogs.

Well I think they should not ban pitbulls!! Because it's not the dog its the owners how they treat the dog and the dog just gets tired of the owner how it treats the dog!!!And the dog just turns on the owner!!SO ALL PEOPLE THAT THINK PITS ARE VISOIS THERE YOU GO!!!SO PEOPLE OUT THERE WITH DOGS AND PITS TREAT YOUR PETS LIKE THEY WANNA BE TREATED AND HOW YOU WOULD WANNA BE TREAted!!!

Pitbulls are not unlike any other animal! It's not fair to judge a book by it's cover. Just because the animals are big, strong, and muscular doesn't mean that they are evil and harmful. All dogs should get a chance, and whether you've ever had a pitbull or not, you shouldn't automatically think they're killers. DONT BAN PITBULLS!!!!!!

I think that people should not judge pitbulls without even knowing then. When you really have one and really know them then you could judge , but not right now. They are the sweetest ,loving , carring, and friendful big dogs i have ever known.
