Here's a ripe little mystery for you: can you name this animal?
About the size of a fox, but with short brown hair and a long cat-like tail, it looked more like an animal in a National Geographic spread out of Africa than any critter native to the woods of central North Carolina.
With, of course, a "[something]-in-headlights" picture!

looks like a cross with a fox and some other breed of canine - probably sterile if it is because I think the species are far enough apart that it shouldn't reproduce. I wouldn't say that it's the grey fox that lost its hair - it has too much hair and no real splotchy areas...
