Water Waders

From the "interesting-question-you-never-bothered-to-ask" file, we have the answer to: Do swimmers slow down or speed up when swimming through something thicker than water? Turns out, makes no difference. Weird.

How much effort does it take? how many calories does the swimmer expend?

I suspect that you can swim as fast in a thicker medium, but that it takes more energy, so that the swimmer will tire faster. I think that distance trials should be held.
