Malpractice Cases Spike ... for Pets

Animal Owners Sue Vets for Emotional Damages

New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Rhode Island are considering legislation granting pet owners the right to sue for pain and suffering damages, including punitive damages for neglect or abuse. Tennessee enacted such a law in 2000 and Illinois passed a version of the law last year. West Virginia has removed caps that once limited damages to the assessed value of a pet.

The trend is part of a growing push to recast pet owners as "guardians" in the eyes of the law, a shift that has some legal scholars worried.

~Working in the veterinary field and being a slave to my cats, I can see why the law should change. You don't lose a pet, you lose a family member.

We just lost our malti-poo due to the negligence of a vet. Dude went to vet for eye infection and was given Rimadyl. Eight 25mg. pills later he went into kidney failure. Dude had kidney disease and should have never been goven this drug. We were told nothing of side effects. We are totally devastated. We buried Dude Aug. 14, he died the 12th. He suffered since July 25 until he died. The vet was arrogant and never apologized to me, as if that would have helped. I just can't believe my Dude is gone. This vet said that Rimadyl does not affect kidneys, only the liver. He is very uninformed about Rimadyl. We are going after him, Dr. Raymond Grimm. Front Royal, Va. He should have his license pulled. He also gave it to my neighbor's 2 yr. old poodle for a sore toenail. They did not give it to their dog. Thank God or he would be dead like my Dude.

Diane, What are you suing for? Is it Rimadyl also?

My dog Buster, miniature pinscher, who would have been fourteen on April 24 was given Rimadyl by vet. for when he hurt a back leg. Took it for almost a week and problem went away then he had problems with lower back. Vet thought he threw his back out, gave muscle relaxers and more Rimadyl. Dog ended up bleeding, vet thought ulcers, tried to correct, dog's kidneys failed, high phosphorus, not eating for two weeks. I was hand feeding him. Vet gave flush for kidneys on Monday as a last effort and said it was up to the dog, well the dog was skin and bones, in agony, went into seizures on Tuesday (vet didn't inform me this could happen). We ended up having to put him to sleep. Vet said he must have had kidney or problem to begin with and the Rimadyl may have progressed it.

The stuff involving the vet with the Rimadyl sounds terrible. Any vet who can read would find the warning in the packaging. Some vets prey on the public's ignorance.

Wander if the families of suicidal good vets should sue the clientelle for damages.
