We just lost our 11 yr. old malti-poo, Dude tp the pill Rimadyl. Dude had an eye infection and came home with Rimadyl. Al, my ex said that the vet gives it to all older dogs. Well, since Al's an ex I did not want to argue. After 4 days,2-25mg.a day Dude became very sick, vomiting, lethargic. He was diagnosed w/kidney disease in 2001 by this vet. Rimadyl should never be given to a dog w/kidney disease. This occurred July 25. I watched my Dude die a horrible death from Rimadyl, He passed away August 12. We buried Dude August 14. This should have never happened. I blame myself every day, my heart is broken without Dude. Why didn't I check this pill out first? I always checked Dude's and my medicine before taking. Tje vet, Raymond Grimm, finally back from his vacation was available to take my call, I said Dude died and you killed him. He said that he did not. The vet said he gave it to Dude because his eyes hurt him. How absurd - We are letting everyone know what this vet has done. This Thursday there is going to be an article about Dude in The Warren Sentinel, Front Royal, Va. The reporter, Roger Bianchini, a top reporter is on this story. Sincerely, Sherry & Al

On 03/15/04. I took my 9 yr. old German Shepard "Rex " to the vet. He had a urinary infection. they did alot of test. and x-rays. He was given an antibiotic and I was told he had minor arthritis. he did yelp once in a while when running in the yard , he was 98 lbs. They reccommended 100 mg. rimadyl 2 x a day. After a week went by we went back for a re-check on the urinary infection. I told the vet he did not seem better, but worse. He seemed to be having more pain than before in his back legs. So they suggested weekly shots of Adequin as well as the rimadyl. The folllowing week for his 2nd shot. I mentioned again that he seemed to be worse. and now he was drooling , and gagging . they said give it time. The following week we went back for our third shot. I told the Vet We were getting very concerned , now my dog was stumbling, uncordinated and the whites of his eyes where blood red. they gave me a perscription for eye drops. The next evening. I heard my beautiful , precious, loving companion crying and dragging himself accross the dining room floor, trying to get to my bedroom. His back legs were completely paralysed. So what did I do ? I gave him another Rimadyl. But 5: am. He was completely paralysed. unable to walk. I called the vet who told me to bring him in at 8:00. We carried him in. only to be told he had no hope. I had to put my beloved Rex to sleep ON 04/12. after 9 yrs. of constant love and protection. I had to explain to my 10 yr. old son, his dog who had been his compainion his whole life, was gone. I know in my heart that My giving Rimadyl to my dog caused his death. After his death I started reasearching this drug. I did not receive any information from the vet. no pamphlett, no instructions, NOTHING. If only I would of checked sooner. I can not help but feel as a parent, I should of known better. I do not want this pain to ever touch another family or animal. Our hearts are broken. God Bless

First question:
Did you all have bloodwork done on your pets before starting the Rimadyl? Its a liver toxic drug if the pet already has underlying liver issues and can become liver toxic quickly if the dog is not cloesly monitored with it.

Second: Did you ask your vet of the pros and cons of an NSAID? Many people are so relived to get pain meds for their pet they forget to ask. Yes is was wrong for your vet not to give you information on this drug.

There is a new drug on the market called Metacam that is known to be safer. Each year new drugs come out. I am very sorry for the losses of both of your pets.

1: yes , all tests where done. I trusted my vet, I thought I was doing the right thing. I was never given any information. when we told him about our concerns his health was deteriorating, we where told to give it time. I was derelict in researching Rimadyl until it was to late.

I just recieved a malti-poo on December 14,2004. I rearranged my entire life for him and did everything for him. He made me so happy, infact i never remeber being as happy as I did when he was with me. January 1,2005 my digital camera was stolen with all my pictures of my new puppy on it, then on Jan. 3 he was attacked while at my boyfriends by a black lab. My baby was just sitting there and the lab put punture wounds in his intestine. He spent 7 hours in surgery. But he only weighed 2 pounds 1 ounce and his little body could not handle all the stress, pain, and medicine. My baby died at 10:30 Jan. 3. He was only 10 weeks old but I loved him as if he was 10 years old. I know how you feel about the loss of your beloved animal. I feel I will never be the same again. Thanks for listening.
