I have seen a case of this once before.
White cats+sun=sunburn/sunblister/cancer.
I had no idea, I will pass this on to my friends who are cat lovers.

Posted by: BESSIE RECTOR on November 14, 2004 09:26 PMWe have a partially feral white cat who has been eating with us (outside for many years). I noticed a sore on his nose and scabs on his ears and managed to get him inside...how do I best deal with the sores to get them healed (his nose has a scab and some rawness, but is fully intact).
Posted by: Julee Carolan on November 16, 2004 05:56 PMtake him to the vet to get looked at.
Posted by: ellen on November 16, 2004 07:20 PMI had a white cat of medium-length fur who had been semi- feral, born to a stray cat in a neighbor's yard. The vet said to keep him out of the sun because of skin cancer in white cats. I tried, but the cat would rip holes in the window screens or dart out any time anyone opened the door briefly to come in or out. He would rub sunsreen off his ear with his paw and then lick his paw. The sunscreen labels said "Do not eat," so why didn't I add something bad tasting like cayenne pepper or the spices turmeric or ginger, which are supposed to reduce the chance of getting cancer in humans if they eat it. After he had gotten out and sunbathed on the neighbor's roof and gotten sunburned a few times, I kept him in a bedroom with the windows closed between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. He was a kitten when he was sunburned, and I read somewhere that human babies and children are more likely to get skin cancer after being sunburned than are adults who get sunburned. When this cat, Lancelot, was about 15 years old, his ears became red without having been sunburned for many years, not since he was a kitten. This was beginning skin cancer. Then his ears, nose, and around his eyes developed scabby bloody sores that would not heal. He had skin cancer, so the vet cut off the cat's ears, and later a couple of tumors when they developed on the cat's leg, but within a year , a big tumor showed up under the cat's chin. It had grown from an unnoticeablely small size to over and inch in diameter within a couple of days. Lancelot could not swallow food or drink and had to be euthanized. I thought that this last tumor may have been caused by the skin cancer spreading, metastasizing {sp?}. I wonder if giving a cat vitamins C and E and/or turmeric and green tea extract an aloe vera orally and/or transdermally could reduce the chances of a cat getting skin cancer and if so, how much would be safe amounts to give, if any.

Posted by: Keoneoe on March 29, 2005 03:59 AMWe have a white cat that was a stray at one point in time. We inherited him from my grandma when she passed on. It used to look just like a small scar/scabbed over on his nose. In the last year or 2 it has gotten really bad. We started putting antibiotic cream on it, and it started to heal up, well actually it healed on the tip of the nose and moved closer to its eye. It is now covering most of the left side of the nose. He keeps taking off the scab, so regardless of what it is, it doesn't get a chance to heal because the scab keeps coming off. Are there any other signs that would point to a cancer, rather than just a badly infected wound? Our vets (2 different ones) didn't seem to know, or at least didn't say anything about it... maybe they just didn't want to deal with it. Any thoughts?

Posted by: Candice on May 7, 2005 02:02 AMI had my white cat for ten years. She loved being outside. Then I noticed her ears were beginning to become pink and tender due to sun burns, so I put sun screen on them. Then her ears began to form scabs, and she began to scratch at them. I cleaned them with antibacterial cream, but she continued to scratch at them. I took her to the vet and they told me she had skin cancer. They told me that white cats should be kept indoors and out of direct sunlight because they are susceptible to cancer. They removed pieces of the damaged ear and tried to save the rest of the healthy ear. On ear healed but, she continued to scratch the other. The cancer spread farther down her ear and a sore developed on one of her eyelids. There was no more hope of her recovering from the wounds. She was in a lot of pain, so we put her to sleep yesterday. I miss my kitty.

My pure snow-white cat, in which I too bathe with every Monday, has gotten itself some skin cancer on the breasts. It keeps licking it to try remove the access scarring but has no hope. I try to keep it from revealing its fanny to the sun but it just won't listen to me god damn it. I'm just not in the mood for this right now, forget it, forget I was even here. Thanks Gemma for being a fellow cleaner, I to want an answer to getting rid of my cat's cancer on the breast.
Posted by: Oddish on September 7, 2005 07:50 PMI' have a 12 yrs old male cat. his nose got cut in fight, took him to the doctor after is wouldn't heal right. He's a all white cat with black spots, looks like a cow. Anyway, the doctor told me he has cancer. The nose scabs over and he washes it off, it bleeds. creams don't help. He doesn't seem to be in pain yet but I can't stand the thought of putting him to sleep wish there was a cure.
Missy
My cat has the same problem as you Missy.
He doesn't seem to be in pain, he runs around and purrs a lot, but the cancer scabs over and he picks it off and causes a lot of bleeding.
I am trying to decide whether to have a large portion of his nose chopped off or whether to have him put to sleep :(
It is very hard because he seems to be happy otherwise.
I found out that my cat has skin cancer on his nose. I didn't even know animals could get sunburn, let alone skin cancer! My vet said that he has 4-6 months until the cancer spreads to his sinuses and lungs, and my cat has 2 months until he will start to feel pain. My vet said that we can do radiation and several surgeries, but my cat is 18 years old and probably wouldn't be able to survive treatment. If your cat has blisters or scabs on their noses, have it checked out ASAP! If your vet doesn't know what it is, it's called nasal squamous cell carcinoma.

Posted by: alison on March 2, 2006 01:48 AMI took my 14 year old female cat to the vets last night. She has scabs on both ears, on one side of her nose and on one of her front paws. The vet suggested it might be ringworm. Have to wait for test results. But it may be an immune deficiency which means she will have to undergo anesthetic and they will take a skin swab from her. If this is the case she will have to have drugs to control/cure. I do hope it is something that is not serious!!! She is mostly black with a white underside.

Posted by: veronica on March 22, 2006 04:09 AMI am shocked to see so many other people dealing with the same issues. I thought we were the only ones. I have a 12 year old all white cat that we rescued from the woods many years ago. She has dealt with food issues and I thought they had just gotten way out of control this year. She scrated herself so hard that some of her ear is ripped. Now she has scabs that won't heal. We have a wonderful vet that suggested it could be cancer but had never seen it in the states, she's from Australia. Her sores just won't heal and they keep forming. The last few days they start to bleed without any scratching, she's wearing a collar and has been for 2 months. I simply typed in "skin cancer in cats" just to see if anything came up and now I'm sitting here in tears. She's a wonderful, sweet cat that has been a delight to care for. I am devastated to read that there are so many other people with the same problem.

Posted by: debra on April 4, 2006 09:09 AMMy family has had my cat for over five years. We adopted him but we never took him to the vet. It's our first cat. We got a dog and she and the cat kept fighting. We chose to give up the dog. Since the dog has been gone, I've noticed this scab on the cat's nose. It just does not want to heal and he's not helping. He's not a white cat. He's multicolored. I am soo worried. I just typed in "scab that won't heal on cat's nose" and everywhere I look is saying it could be cancer. I love my cat very much and was wondering if there could be another explanation for it.

Posted by: helen on April 10, 2006 11:07 AMHi i have a white female cat that i had since kitten now 10yrs old....i started seeing her ears getting worse and thinking might be ear mites etc...it started getting more scabby and bleeding which i thought maybe cause she been scratching it.she also sometimes was bleeding from nose...well took her in vet this morning and they said its a type of cancer thats common with white cats...i could have had her ears chppoed off right down as far as you can go and nose freeezed dryed off etc..but i think its unfair and better to put her to slep which i did.
i think better and more humane for them to do so..
Sadly, my cat had to be put to sleep last week. Her biopsy in April was inconclusive, but everything I have read points to skin cancer. She endured wearing an Elizabethan collar for almost 5 months and was really good about it. We worked with steriods and a topical pain reliever to try to make her as comfortable as possible. I have a wonderful vet who was very optimistic and wanted to surgically remove her ears. I felt in my heart it wasn't right for my cat, but that's not to say it isn't for others.
If you find yourself in this very sad sitution, I suggest you try to find a vet that deals with cats only, like I have in MI, or a vet office that has a vet that specializes in cats. My cat also suffered from food allergies for years and it was only after I found The Cat Practice, and my vet, that she got relief. I fully believe our vet made a very tragic situation the best it could have been, from beginning to end. Hopefully one day we can find a cure for all cancers-for both humans and animals.

Posted by: debra on May 25, 2006 11:03 AMWe have a white older cat who developed what we thought was an infection on his nose perhaps from another cat swiping his face. But for about 6 months it has just gotten worse and worse. It scabs up, then the scab falls off and he bleeds a lot. Then it scabs up again and the process continues. It has increased to cover the whole upper portion of his nose. Lucky he can still breathe. It looks just terrible and people get scared when they see him. He is sooooo sweet and we love him. But I'm thinking he has Cancer and wonder if he needs to be put down for his own well being. Can anyone give me any advice? Does this sound like Cancer to those of you who are educated regarding animal illnesses? Or have any of you had a similar experience with your cat? I could sure use some help making the euthanasia decision.
Posted by: Eileen on May 30, 2006 01:20 AMI have a pure white male cat 1 year old with one blue eye and one green eye. At 6 months i thought he had cancer, because a mole type scab appeared on his ear and stayed there for a couple of weeks. On friday i took him to be desexed and i asked the vet to check the year and the spot was gone! it was very weird. I put my cat out for 1 hour a day from 5pm onwards and if his in the window seal i put on sunscreen, even though he licks it off trust me its better then nothing! so put sunscreen on your cats ears! It might not help that well but its at least something. Good luck i know how you all feel i work at a animal shelter and the amount of cats we see come through and have to be put to sleep due to cancer.. i know the pain your all going through.. Good luck!

Can anyone tell me what I could do to comfort him? Get rid of his 'itch'?
the Vet has given him cortesone (sp?) shots and a topical cream, but... THANKS!
I have a white tortoiseshell cat who is 16 years old. she is just beautiful but has sufered with recurring cancer on her nose. I Can not believe that some of you people have allowed 6 months to go by with your cat having an unhealing wound and not seeing a vet! I doubt that you would wait that long if you had a sore that was not healing. my cat is going in for surgery after many many minor procedures tomorrow to have her nose pretty much taken off. i have be assured that it will not compromise her quality of life - in fact it will make it better. i have every confidence in the surgeon. york had her bottom eyelid and much of her cheek removed 3 years ago and they made a new eyelid from the inside of her lip. she looks great and has not had any problems with her eye since. my advice to all is if you see anything even slightly abnormal with your cats appearance get it to the vet straight away - and if you are not happy with the results then see another vet pronto!
Posted by: donna on August 7, 2006 06:54 PMMy cat had a scabby nose and given that I had already lost a cat to nose cancer, I thought I knew what I was up for. But guess what. It healed up. He used to knock the scab off and blood would be sprayed everywhere when he sneezed. Then I said a prayer and fed him tinned pink salmon and within 2 weeks, he was cured. Brand new shiny PINK nose. I look at him and marvel everytime at the beauty of his pinky. I thought for sure I would lose him. So don't give up. If my cat can heal, then so can yours. Say a prayer and don't forget the pink salmon. It a miracle too true.

Posted by: summer on November 24, 2006 04:03 AMMy cat is going in to the vet's this afternoon after almost 3 months of dealing with a sore on his foot that won't heal. We have gone through 2 amputations, of a lump, then his toe, now more profuse bleeding. He looks healthy, hasn't lost weight but the bleeding won't stop and the place won't heal. The vet said it could well be cancer. I have a feeling he is going to end up having to be put to sleep and I am sick about it. Don't want to keep amputating and amputating more of his leg and still the same outcome. Hate to put him to sleep as well; feel very torn.
Posted by: lachase on December 27, 2006 05:49 AMIf your cats have scabs on their heads/faces you can go to a pet store and buy one of those shields that you see on dogs, buy one for a small dog. They look like lamps walking around, but they can still walk up and down stairs, use the litter box and eat. Don't let them go outside though. Just use this long enough to let the scabs heal.

Posted by: Andrew on January 25, 2007 08:16 PMIf you have a cat with a scab on it's nose that won't heal it's probably cancer. Take the animal to a vet and get the appropriate treatment/surgery done !! If your vet doesn't seem concerned then find another vet. I have a vet who dismissed my concern over my cats sore nose for over a year. Last week the poor things nose partially collapsed on one side. I insisted on a biopsy and found out, of course, that it is cancer. I'm taking him to the University of Florida next Tuesday for treatment. If the vet had treated it when it was a small spot it could have been handled easily, at little cost and the cat would have had a much better chance of survival not to mention less discomfort. Now I'm having to prepare myself for a very bad prognosis. I'm angry at the vet for not taking this seriously, angry at myself for not getting another opinion and angry at people who are posting here that think putting sunscreen or some potion on cancer is going to heal it or asking what they should do. DUH !! Take your pet to a professional now !!! Put a crowbar in your wallet and give your animal the care it deserves before it's too late.
Posted by: Lori Austill on February 10, 2007 07:51 PMMy family had a 20 yr old black cat named Sheba who we had to put to sleep yesterday. About two months ago she started developing relatively small lumps around her eyes and the base of her ears. Her first was on her back though, but it went away. We brought her to the vet and we were told that she may have skin cancer. The tests and treatment were quite expensive, and the vet thought that she might not have the strength to endure the process. So we decided to try antibiotics, and wait to see what happened. The antibiotics did not have much effect and the lumps became sores that spread over much of Sheba's face. She had almost completely stoped eating, so when it seemed like even she felt it was time to give up we decided it was time to put her to sleep.
WE MISS YOU SHEBA!!!
my dear old cat Hobbes has an odd wound? on his back toe; the vet said I should be aware that a toe wound like that could be metastatic lung cancer - i.e. the breakaway cells travel from the lung through the blood stream until the capillaries become too small and block the ugly cells. the tiny capillaries in the back toes are the first place these breakaway cells get blocked. Hobbes has never sniffed cigarette smoke, and has no symptoms of coughing, or losing weight; but a week later no healing has really taken place in spite of clamavox and an anti-inflammatory. Now I am worried; I was breezy about it at first, he seems so well, apart from the toe..... but - help!!!
Posted by: elizabeth Barry on October 31, 2007 09:43 PMI found out yesterday my white cat alfie, 10yrs old has skin cancer. He has lost some weight (although still eating and happy) I thought he'd been in a fight as he had a wound on his nose and ear but with even bathing it and applying antibiotic cream it was getting worse, scabbing over and eating in to alfies ear. he is in pain and now wont let me anywear near his ear. I had booked an appointment at the vets on monday to have the main part of his ear amputated but he has a small area on his other ear plus the area on his nose. I have decided to stop being selfish for wanting to keep alfie with me and think of him and the quality of life he probably wont have before too long. I have decided he will be put to sleep on monday. cher
